Los Roques in Venezuela

Nature and Islands of Los Roques

Los Roques in VenezuelaLos Roques is an archipelago located off the Venezuelan coast and on the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. The archipelago consists of more than 350 islands, islets, and cayes, which together occupy an area of 543,000 acres. Los Roques are unique in many ways: first, because they are one of the few atolls in the Caribbean; secondly, because of the large amount of territory that they cover, which makes Los Roques Latin America’s largest marine park; and lastly, because of the unique array of animal species that inhabit the archipelago.

Once the local authorities realised the value and biodiversity of this archipelago, Los Roques was declared a national park. As a result, the local fauna has thrived, and nowadays visitors can expect to see green and carey sea turtles, dolphins, whales, up to 300 fish species, more than 60 types of coral reefs, numerous types of sea sponges, and nearly 100 bird species, including pelicans, flamingos, seagulls, swallows, and frigate birds.

Gran Roque is the only island that is inhabited year round. Other islands worth visiting are Cayo de Agua, Rasqui, Madrisqui, Crasqui, and Francisqui, and Cayo Carenero. One thing is certain: wherever you go in Los Roques, you will feel as if you’d just walked into a living postcard.
